Working together for a sustainable future.

At Fraunhofer IWES, we are continuously working on optimizing wind energy and hydrogen technologies. With its research services, IWES makes a significant contribution to advancing the energy transition and substantially decreasing the associated costs. Our expertise and unique test infrastructure allow us to systematically identify and minimize development risks in new products and systems. In this way, we help to accelerate the certification and time to market of innovative products while simultaneously increasing their quality level. By doing so, we contribute to their reliable functionality and transparent financing.

IWES boosts innovation strength with its participation in many development projects in the wind industry and a wide variety of registered patents. We are making significant contributions to the energy transition for a global future worth living. Find out more about our vision, how important sustainability is to us, and what the symbiotic relationship between wind energy and hydrogen means for the energy system of the near future.

People at IWES

One key source of motivation for the IWES staff is the desire to play an active role in the shaping of a sustainable future. The focus is on the use of electricity from wind turbines and the production of green hydrogen.

We don’t just think, we also get to work in all areas of the institute. Be it on the test bench or aboard the research vessel, on the computer or in the lecture hall: we work on future topics with enthusiasm wherever we are. Would you like to join us? We look forward to getting to know you!

Research at IWES

Are you already familiar with our focus topics? For example: How are maintenance data digitalized, standardized, and automated? How is offshore wind energy use expanded safely and sustainably? How can we further accelerate technological advancements with our testing infrastructure? How can wind energy be employed even more efficiently for electrolytic hydrogen production? We don’t just tackle these research topics and questions on our own: our networks and cooperations are ideal for smooth and confidential knowledge transfer. Our cooperations with partners and clients also benefit from this.

IWES network

IWES is one of 76 institutes and research facilities of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft: the world’s leading organization for applied research. Correspondingly, our principles are aligned with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s internationalization strategy: strategic international cooperations aid the institute’s scientific value creation. In addition, they also bring positive effects for both Germany and the respective partner country. You can find out more about the cooperations with our partners and clients both at home and abroad on the following pages.
