Rotor blades are among the most highly loaded components in a wind turbine. Loads from wind and gravity affect the structure in a combination that cannot be reproduced by conventional testing methods. The aim of the SmarTestBlade research project is therefore to further develop and validate methods for the realistic validation of rotor blades utilizing elliptical biaxial testing to apply combined loads on future rotor blades. This will result in a method corresponding to the requirements of a type test.

Fraunhofer IWES is developing and operating a mobile grid emulator with an output of 80 megavolt-amperes (MVA) to measure the electrical properties of wind turbines and to demonstrate current and future grid system services. The setup consists of two independent converter-strings,which can be coupled to electrically test wind turbines up to 20MW. The total installed converter power of 80MVA also makes it possible to handle large short-circuit currents from wind turbines.
