Digital twins offer many possibilities to evaluate data during operation, to use it, and to profitably feed it back to the real system. The lifetime of the systems is very long, but the environment and the system itself are continually changing - this characteristic is really particular in the wind industry.
Reasons for change can be modifications of the turbine, like a retrofit for aerodynamic improvements, or as well adjustments regarding the control system or variations of the environment like the construction of buildings. In order to represent this modularity, modular models and the infrastructure for managing the models, data und simulations is necessary.
Within the project DigiWind, a reference architecture for digital twins will is being extended in such a way that it can represent modularity and take into account modifications incorporated into the system. In doing so, the foundation for a digital twin for wind energy systems is created. The developed procedures will be applied by estimating the residual service life of components and put to the test on the Adwen AD 8-180 research turbine.
